Yes you have to download songs onto your ipod. you get can songs for free too but not neccessarily from itunes. You can use limewire or morpheus. When you download on limewwire right click on the object you are downloading and click change file location to were you want the file to appear when the download finishes. Then go to your library on tunes and click add file to library and add the music. Once you have done that connect the ipod to your computer using the usb port cable that comes with your ipod. Then it will download automatically to your ipod. The shuffle button varies which songs will be played in an anonymous order. Also beware that doing this will take a while. Also be willing to wait a while to charge your ipod when you first buy it because the battery is weak at first. To charge your Ipod you must connect it to the computer with the same cab;le you use to download stuff. Yes you will be able to choose which song you want to hear on the Ipod Nano.Standard Ipod, but as far as i know not on the shuffle si mply because the name of the product refers to randomly picking songs. Ipod is just a cooler glamorized version of the Mp3 it may be more expensive but it sure is better than an Mp3 player because of two reasons in my opinion it is much cooler and because it can carry way more songs than your standard Mp3.
P.S Sorry for the length o0f this answer just trying to be helpful i hope this answers you question adequately.

I also hope to purchase an ipod today. I recieved an iPod Shuffle for christmas but I am not satisfied with it. It is a defective one which is very uncommon with Apple iPods so I am returning it and buying an iPod Nano, which is a smaller version of an iPod that plays 2,000 songs and has games to play on it. iPods can play music, games, take pictures, and play videos. An Mp3 player only plays music and doesn't hold a large amount of music as opposed to the iPods. You have to download music onto your iPod and an Mp3 player. You must first download a music downloading program onto your computer. Such as limewire or frostwire, both of which require no fee. You must know the name of the song and you type it in the search engine and double click the one you wish to download. Then you have to download iTunes and which ever songs you downloaded and wish to have on your iPod, you drag them from limewire to iTunes. The shuffle button will play your songs out of order, if the shuffle button is off the songs will play in the order you downloaded them. iPods go for about $250, iPod Nano $149-199, iPod Shuffle $80 and Mp3 Players range in prices. Remember you will need a charger, read the box to make sure your type of iPod will fit on the charger. Many other accesories for your iPod are available to buy in any nearby electronic shop.

An iPod and an MP3 player are similar, but MP3 players are usually compatable with more online music purchasing services. However, the iPod is the only music player that is intended to be able to be used with iTunes, which is the best online music service (according to popular opinion). You will need to download iTunes in order to use the iPod.
You don't HAVE to download songs onto your iPod. You can download music from iTunes or upload from CD's you own to the iTunes music program, then once you plug your iPod in, it will automatically update the iPod with those songs (a process that usually takes 1 minute or so, depending on how much new information is going into the iPod).
If you get a larger 30 or 60 GB iPod, it will come with software for the iPod, and it will have a screen where you can select the song by artist, song title, album, from playlists you create, genre, etc. If you get the shuffle, may have to download the software from Apple's website, or it may download automatically now-a-days. To chose a song on the shuffle, you must create the order of the songs on your "iPod Shuffle playlist" and you'll have to chose the song by skipping through the list. The shuffle switch will play the songs in random order.

You can carry it around with you if working out and there are armbands to put it on your arm while working out. I couldn't care less about MP3's never had one, so I don't know the difference but I'm sure there isn't much of one. You need iTunes to put songs onto an iPod. iTunes is on a computer, where yo store songs and buy them if you get an iTunes card (each song is 99 cents, there are audiobooks and videos too) You can choose the song, yes, but not on an iPod shuffle, which shuffles the songs for you. The shuffle button randomly chooses a song for you to listen to instead of you choosing, but you can go back and choose your song if you don't want to listen to the one the machine randomly picked. The menu button will go back, like if you were on the albums page, which shows which albums you have on your iPod, just press the menu button and you'll be back at the music page where you can choose from playlists, songs, genres, etc that you have. if you want to go back to the main menu, just press the menu button again, etc.
The iPod comes with a cord to attach your iPod to the computer. If you want to put songs onto it, go to iTunes. There will be an icon that says, "my iPod" or something. drag your songs to that, and it will go onto your iPod. then rightclick and press eject iPod and only then can you unplug it. If I'm not making sense, there will be directions in the box the iPod comes in, or you can ask a dude at the store where you get your iPod and they can answer your questions better than me!! The only difference between the kinds of iPods is that some are bigger, some smaller, and they each hold a different amount of songs. Like 4 GB might hold 2,000 songs. I think. I don't really know my GB's (gigabytes) so that's probably wrong but yeah.... okay hope I helped!

An iPod is an MP3 player.
Yes you have to download songs and you can do it by connecting it to your computer and installing iTunes for free from http://www.apple.com
You can upload your songs to iTunes from CD's or from the Apple store for .99ea. There are numerous places to get songs. You create a folder in iTunes and then drag copy them into your iPod which shows up as a folder.
You can scroll through the songs you have loaded on your iPod and pick and choose which song to listen to.
The Shuffle button takes all the songs on the pod and basically radom picks which to play. This is noce because otherwise, it plays in the same order you loaded the pod.
All the iPods except the one CALLED Shuffle have a video screen in which you can see what song you are listening to and selecting. The Shuffle is the tiny one the size of a matchbook and has no display.

the ipod can play mp3's, but usually uses a sligtly different format (MP4) that will not play on other mp3 players.
You can download songs through iTunes(avail for both mac and PC), Or you can load your exisiting CD's into itunes and put onto the ipod.
you can choose the song you want to listen to (I'm not sure about on the little shuffle versions of the ipod, they may just do that -shuffle)
the shuffle feature on a regular Ipod will play random songs in your library.

Well the the IPOD is actually just the name that is considered the Apple brand, however if you want it just to workout you should check into the IPOD Shuffle it is small. I have the large IPOD just for fun movies, videos and songs, however if you are not into all of that the "shuffle" would work great for you. It is $79.00 so if you wanted to get it first and then ge the other one later the investment would not have been that expensive for a product at you don't know much about.

An iPod is an MP3 player. It's just that an iPod is brand name and a lot funner to show of. I would choose an iPod but if you go to Walmart they have like 60g mp3's for 50 bucks. (Kinda) A 60 gig iPod would cost a lot more than that.

an ipod is an mp3 player. when purchasing an ipod you will get instructions and also software for you to transfer music from comp to ipod. if you already have music on your comp, you just open the ipod software (itunes) drap and drop the selected track you want into itunes. you can download songs from the itunes store which you can get access to from the itunes software. i own a nano so i can see the track name when i go through the playlist. if you do buy one speak to the shop assistant on how to use the device. its better for them to show you than me trying to explain how to move to the next track, and so on.
