My wife downloaded a virus and now my .exe file association is screwed up. I run Win98SE. How do I fix this? I was able to do an online virus scan, but I can't run Norton because it's not associated.

I can't find my Win98 install disk and none of my utilities will work.

That sounds like the old Sircam virus. Several other viruses would do that too. Here's now to fix it.

Boot into DOS mode. You need to locate the regedit.exe file. It's located in either C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System To locate it, type:

CD\windows

and press enter.

Type:

dir regedit.exe

Press Enter

You should see it listed. If it's not in Windows, type cd system and press enter and repeat the dir command.

When you find it, rename it to regedit.com. To do that, type:

ren Regedit.exe Regedit.com

Press Enter.

Boot into safe mode.

Click Start...Run. Enter regedit.com and press Enter. Registry Editor should now run.

Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command

Look at the default entry on the right pane. It needs to read:

"%1" %*

That's double-quote percent 1 double-quote space percent asterisk. If it reads anything else, double-click the entry and copy and paste the setting I posted above in its place.

Reboot into Windows. Either from a DOS prompt or in Windows Explorer, rename Regedit.com to Regedit.exe

Your machine should run properly now.

run system file checker in the system tools. It replaces any changed system files. Hopefully it will solve your problem
If it is not functioning then boot using your windows cd to start dos mode and try SFC /SCANNOW (I am not sure if it is the right command for system file checker in win98, but it is in XP, hopefully its dos name could be the same. Also most probably you can do a non destructive install in win98, try to run a repair install if there is such an option when you boot from a win98 disk.
