I've been in a relationship for over 7 years and I do care a lot about him. The thing is that I met this guy that I would like to write to as friends, but my boyfriend doesn't understand this. He is insecure about the whole thing. This other guy is JUST a friend, a pen-pal to write to while he's in prison. It helps him pass the time for a few minutes anyways. My brothers have been in prison and they've told me how much they would enjoy getting mail. This is part of the reason I would like this pen-pal. Mostly, he's just fun to write to.

Think about it this way, if reversed, would you want your boyfriend to have a female pen-pal as JUST a friend while with you? If you can honestly say it wouldn't bother you, then I think it's ok. However, I think if you've been with this guy for 7 years that it would have to bother you. Writing is a lot more personal than just talking to someone of the opposite sex while in a relationship and you have to understand that he doesn't want you being so intimate with someone else. If you really love your boyfriend why risk peace in your relationship on someone you don't even know? Besides, you only know what this guy is telling you and chances are if he is in prison, you probably shouldn't be involved with him in any way except maybe sending him material about God and bettering himself or something. Like I said, if you can HONESTLY say it wouldn't bother you if roles were reversed then so be it. I have been with my husband for nearly 13 yrs now and I know it would bother me. It is easy to say it wouldn't until it happens. Sharing thoughts and emotions is very intimate and your boyfriend probably feels like these should be things shared with him alone. Good luck in what ever you decide, but reassure your bf that you love him and maybe let him read the letters so he knows you have nothing to hide.
