The Taliban was the government of Afghanistan, before we kicked their butts. They were religious dictators, extremists, banning music, repressing women, forcing people to follow the official form or religion, banning sculpture, etc.
They started when Soviet Russia invaded Afghanistan. The US helped the Afghanis, just like how 60 years ago the US helped the Soviet Russians against Hitler. Hitler was worse than Stalin, and the Afghanis were better than the Soviets.
The Taliban have been kicked out of power in Afghanistan, but they're still hanging around the outskirts, and in parts of Pakistan. Very hard to get rid of them. But we're right to fight against them. Good to liberate the people of Afghanistan. A hard thing to do, but worthwhile. Maybe we should fight harder. Maybe we should be harsher to our enemies. The enemy is pretty nasty.

The Taliban came into existence in 1994 and were sponsored by the Pakistani Intelligence services. The Taliban are an extreme Islamic religious sect that wants everybody to be ruled by their interpretation of Islamic law.

The Russians went into Afghanistan, and had a similar experience to ours in Viet Nam. This left a vacuum. Radical Islamists of a very extreme stripe filled it. Moslem clerics formed a council and ruled by theocracy. At one time they were paid by the US (Alex Jones) when they and Unocal were cooperating on a pipeline project to bring Russia's Caspian oil fields to the sea. When they instead made a deal with an Argentinian concern, they were branded as evil Islamist terrorists.
