They're not killed specifically for the makeup brushes, but the hair comes from pelts removed from slaughtered animals. The processor skins the animal, and then sells the raw hides in bulk for various uses (leather, hair, etc).

Pony hair typically comes from the belly hair of young horses who are butchered.

well I hope they are not alive when they skin them! most ilkely the animal is not killed specifically to make a make-up brush, usually every part of the animal is used for some use when they are slaughtered. but do some research or buy animal-free brushes (not as soft) try Lush or Bath and Body Works (both are anti- animal cruelty).
