Why doesn't anyone just explain it??
Unwrap the tampon. Hold onto the thicker end (the end with the star that the cotton comes out of) and insert it into the vagina. It's easiest when you either stand with one foot on the toilet lid, or sit on the toilet with your legs slightly apart. Insert it until the thick part is almost completely inside, but you're still able to hold onto it. Use your other hand to push the skinny side into the thicker side, just like a syringe when you get a shot. If it doesn't slide smoothly, like you're bumping into something, just lean forward a bit. When the tampon is inserted, remove the applicator by grasping the thicker end and pulling out slowly. The string should be outside and everything is comfortable. If it hurts or otherwise doesn't feel right, pull the string slowly to remove.
Just remember to change it often, and use a pad at night. I usually change every time I go to the bathroom.

I would suggest purchasing one of the small boxes of tampons (I think there are 6 in a box)...and get the slender size...with a smooth applicator... trust me on this one... lol... then, inside the box are pictures and instructions on how to insert the tampon. Read ALL the instructions and warnings FIRST before going all willy-nilly and trying to do it. And remember, you can't leave it in ALL day... that is VERY dangerous to your health!!! Good luck.. and one more thing... no, it doesn't cause you to NOT be a virgin anymore.

Read the instruction insert that comes in the box. It even has illustrations, you insert not apply.
