Oh there are so many reasons. Usually you can just ask they don't want an excuse.
The real question is why do you want a extension. That is the reason.

I work at a courthouse. Saying you don't have legal representation can help but they may just appoint the public defender and you would still be stuck there. Be careful what excuse you use though, because they can ask for documentation to be sure that your excuse is real.

yes, Hospitalization. if you cant be there, not by choice then you will be excused. BUT so you dont hurt yourself...
any sickness that will do... like a really bad cold... if you keep on disturbing everyone else because of your sniffles, then the judge may just take pity on you.. plus, you can always say that you are not in the proper state of health to proceed, and would be a direct violation of the constitution...

Your lawyer would give U the best advice; aside from that, go to the presiding court asap & ask the clerk for the proper procedure - tell them U suspect emotional abuse !
