Minneapolis is one of those hidden gems in the upper Midwest. It's well known as both an outdoors area and an arts and performing arts area.
The Walker Arts Center and Science Museum are perfect starting places in Minneapolis. The downtown area has a good number of comedy clubs worth checking out at night. In downtown St. Paul (adjoined to Minneapolis) the Children's Museum is a wonderful place for children to explore.
Minneapolis has some terrific park and recreation areas right downtown for those that enjoy running or walking. These are particularly beautiful in the spring and fall colors. Lake Minnetonka caters to an upscale clientel and is perfect for an afternoon or evening boat cruise.
If you're inclined to taking a small trip, Stillwater, MN (just east of the Twin Cities) is a perfect area for antiquing. It also sports one of the best dinner trains (the Zepher) you'll find in the country.
For shopping, The Mall of America and incorporated within it, the indoor amusement park Camp Snoopy, are worth a winter's visit and experience. During summer months, just south of the metro is Valley Fair, a very large amusement park in the mode of "Six Flags".
