I want to be a legal secretary, but I also want to get a bachelor's degree. Could I major in pre-law or what? I've researched it with no luck- any help is greatly appreciated.

Actually, I am very ambitious. I was going to go into law, but then decided I didn't want a job to run my life. I don't want to be a lawyer, it's too cut throat and it's not my thing. I want to be a legal secretary. I want to work with people and write and research.

..Oh, and sorry for the grammatical diarrhea in the question...I have no clue why I typed it that way. It should read, "What should I major in if I want to be a legal secretary?"

To be a legal secretary, one doesn't necessarily need a specific degree, because it's mainly administrative clerical functions. If you're a good typist and administrative assistant, and can handle learn some legal jargon and business, then you'll do OK.

But if you want to obtain some specific training, then I would suggest going to Community College for an Associates or Certificate in something like Paralegal or Legal Assistant. Even something like Office Skills or Administrative Assistant, combined with a course in Intro to Law would probably sufficient.

I don't think you're ambitious enough. If you want your bachelor's degree, you are going to be over-qualified to be a legal secretary. Why don't you major in English and then go to law school??

EDIT: I'm sure it is different depending on the firm, but my husband is a lawyer and his secretary does not do any research or actual writing. I do think it is a demanding job, though, but not exactly what you're thinking. Are you sure you're not thinking about a paralegal job?? They do a lot of research and some writing.

You don't need college to be a legal secretary. you can take a cheap course for that. I would aim higher than legal secretary. Major in criminal justice. I am a legal secretary with a paralegal certificate. But you can only go so far. You can do human resources too - in a law firm! That's a nice major and gives you versatility. How old are you? I can help you - email me - mscree8tive@yahoo.com.

I worked as a Legal Administrative Assistant for 2 decades and now work as a Paralegal. You could do a 2 year associates degree for Legal Assistant or Paralegal. There are also Paralegal certification programs, but I would recommend the degree, as many law firms and in-house law departments require one.
