Normally I would say ignore the person, including the slander. But the threats need to be dealt with, I would notify the police if they are severe and try to get a restraining order like others have suggested. Getting a restraining order will probably damage the credibility of their slander too once other parties realize that this has happened. Make sure to keep yourself safe, and if possible record the threats to a tape if its over the phone, or save any threatening emails / message board posts / myspace entries that you can find as evidence.

Is this in a work setting or social setting?

You can sue a person for personal slander. You can file a restraining order if you feel threatened.

If this person comes to your home without being invited, call the police. 911 is a good place to start.

You need to start documenting these threats. Start building a case against this person. Have witnesses. Use the law to your advantages.

First go to your local police station (UK) and report what is happening. Anti harassment laws are strictly enforced by the police because they usually lead to a conviction.

Second go to a solicitor (lawyer) and seek advice on taking out an injunction against those who are harassing you. Once this is in place, any further harassment of you by the person or persons will be deemed as contempt of court.

You have a strong set of laws to defend you. Do not be afraid.

First thing, keep a record of everything that happens, times, dates, what was said, who were the witnesses, etc. Retain any letters, emails, etc. If you need to take matters further, you will need all this.

Second, go to the Citizens Advice Bureau and the Police if you are in Britain.

Thirdly, inform yur former friend that you have reported him/her to the police.

File a legal complaint first with the police. Get on the record. Keep a detailed log. Document every interaction with the person. If the court won't issue a restraining order based on your filing, hire private security protection for yourself. Then file a claim in small claims court against the harasser.. make them pay for all costs involved with your protection. In essence, make them pay to protect you against them.

You need to get documentation. If you live in one of the ~40 states where law abiding citizens have the right to carry a concealed weapon then you should get the training and get the permit. Unless you live in Vermont, in which case you do not need a permit. What are you going to do if he smashes in the door, ask him to wait while you call the police?

go to the polic if the threats are really bad and if you think they are sincere enough to warrent it, go to a shelter.

You can get a restraining order on him, as soon as you are sure you are safe (this should be your first priority so contact officials if you feel you are unsafe and get to a shelter if you feel it's necessary) contact your lawyer and they will be able to talk you through the process of getting a restraining order.

If they make a physical threat against you, you may be able to get a restraining order against them. The best thing to do would be to check with your local police.
