I thought it was called an orphan or orphaned words but I can't find anything on the 'net to back me up on this.

A text "widow" or "orphan" is where a single word or line is separated from a main paragraph. These terms are still used in word processing.

In typesetting, a widow appears if the first line of a paragraph is appearing at the bottom of a page with the remainder appearing on the following page. If a word or the last line of a paragraph appears at the top of a page, with the rest of the paragraph appearing on the preceding page, it is referred to as an orphan.

Orphan and sometimes widow. The difference was clearer before the death of typesetting.
