I was taken advantage of by a cab driver on Christmas. He had an illegal cab, agreed to a flat rate to my destination, then after having to backtrack 4 times, and add an extra 10 miles to the trip, he had the audacity to demand almost double what we agreed on, and threatened to tell the police that I refused to pay the fare if I didn't give him more money. I was maneuvered and taken advantage of because I needed to get to my relatives' house. What would you do?

If he was running a gypsy taxi, IE no meter, no license, and I'll bet no insurance, I'd have let the little sod call the police. Next time take a licensed taxi, Top light, meter, company phone number on the taxi, that way if you fell that you've been over charged, demand a receipt from the driver and call the company. The police frown on gypsy cabs. You also took a huge risk with your personal saftey by ever getting into this idiot's car.

You should just let it go. The best thing would have been to get out of the cab without paying. I don't think illegal cabs are allowed to call the police over unpaid fares.

Well, I wouldn't have gotten into an illegal cab in the first place...unfortunately, you agreed to a flat rate...however, I would still report it (if you have the license plate number or something)!

I'd have paid the pre-agreed fare and called the cops for him. If he was running an illegal cab, he would have beat feet pretty quickly!

well, do you have anything to identify this person? some kind of id, taxi number, license plate number, anything? a receipt? otherwise, you're kinda outta luck if you just made a verbal agreement with this guy.

Call his bluff. He's an illegal taxi and he took you for a ride, literally. He's in big trouble.

I would have handed him the phone, gave him the number and dared him to call.
