I really found the I Hate Republicans reader to be funny but also informative (though you wouldn't know it from the title).
I also like anything Al Franken (yes, that's stereotypical liberal, but he's very funny,and his facts do check out).
Adams v. Jefferson, the tumultuous election of 1800, is an excellent book on the formation of American politics and how the 2nd and 3rd elections cemented our current system. This is very dry, but highly information reading (also very objective, no opinions)

Republican conspiracies? Try "All the president's men" by bob woodward and Carl Bernstein. Don't forget to check out Noam Chomsky, especially "What uncle sam really wants"
