I've heard of some new out of the box with bad batteries. Bring it back to the store right away with the receipt for replacement. Tell them it didn't work right out of the box.

It seems that the shop might have given you a second hand one, because they all come with manuals. Return it immediately and ask for your money back then buy one from a different shop.

Also, i heard that over-charging can damage the battery, so it could have been your fault. Only charge until the battery is full, then stop.

You are supposed to charge it on the computer. If your computer went on standby, then it didn't charge. If that isn't the problem, then maybe you installed the ipod software on to your computer wrong. You are supposed to install the software on to your computer and then put songs on it. Then, it should charge just fine. My ipod shuffle came with a user guide. Sorry yours didn't. If your ipod shuffle did not come with a CD to upload the software onto your computer, then your ipod shuffle is a dud. See if you can exchange it.
