- Uninstall any programs that you no longer need.
- Add more RAM (memory)
- Defragment the drive (Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Defragmenter)
- Run anti-spyware software such as Spybot Search and Destroy or Ad-Aware to clear any spyware that may be slowing your computer down.

Best way is to add more RAM and do a complete reformat and reinstall, but that can be more hassle than it's worth if you don't know what you're doing.

Remove any programs that you don't need. Add more RAM. I would also get a spyware remover and run it completely and remove ANY spyware that it finds and re-run it again just to make sure...Defrag HD.. Check to see if you have any programs running in the background that would be taking up any resources...and if so remove them from the start-up. They will not be removed from the system, but by removing them from start-up they will not be running in the background.....

Chances are it's your anti-virus software "getting in the way".

I'm with McAfee - its like watching paint dry because it is continually updating everytime I switch the damn thing on!

I've heard Norton isn't much better.

I contacted McAfee on a chatroom sort of basis and they instructed me quite clearly how to change a couple of settings to speed things up. You might be able to do the same with your provider.

You can always go to the disk defragmenter. Go to start, programs, accessories, system tools, then disk defragmenter. It might take a little while, but it's worth it =]
