Venice thrived, and built a small empire including the Greek island of Crete, largely on trade in the 1400s-1600s.

Guangzhou did very well out of providing the cheap labour and land for Hong Kong during the late 20th century. But the real trade centre was HK.

Samarkand thrived for centuries as a centre on the Silk Road in the middle ages, and declined when the West opened up the sea route to China instead.

Timbuktu ditto with trans-Sahara trade and the sea route between N and W Africa.

Cairo? How many centuries ago was it last a trade centre? Zillions?
