I believe if you can move it/bend it, then it's probably not "broken." If it were broken there would be pretty bad pain, unability to completely bend it, swelling on and around the area, maybe some bruising, and abnormal shaping of the finger.
It could just be popped out of joint, some kind of bone/joint bruise from however you injured it, or a slight fracture which isn't considered a "break."
If it keeps bothering you, get to your doctor and get it checked out!

The only way to know for sure is to get an xray. If your finger hurts a lot however, you can help it, by getting a splint and taping it yourself with first aid tape. I would try this first and if it doesn't feel better in a few days then see the doctor. If you broke it in such a way they may need to reset it. Ouch - sorry.

I broke my thumb skiing years ago - didn't even realize if for months... only found out by accident when I was required to get an xray because of pain weightlifting...
So it sounds like you might have a cracked bone, but not a full on break... see a doc and get an xray on it done...
Or, if its like what I had - just let it go - it will get better, though you may experience increasing pain as you get older.

actually the right person u must see is the physiotherapist, they can treat that using hot pack, electrical stimulator , paraffin wax and ultrasound(PT ultrasound)i guess the tendon on your thumb was just the problem and it was not a fracture..try to do some joint mobilization, pull it and then press it up and down, and after doing that for 10 counts and 10 reps, make a hot pack and put it into ur thumb for 10-20 minutes,do that on the next day until the pain gone...good luck, get well soon....

Constant pain! You will know if you actually broke your finger because the pain will be intense . Very rarely does a break cause no signs or symptoms, However you should get it seen by the doctor just to rule it out. You might just need a finger splint which you can buy at CVS or Walgreen's. If the pain is "bad" please get it checked!

If you can move it without extreme pain, it isn't broken. You will need to see a doctor to get an exact answer.
If you want to guess, then it might be arthritis. I have it and those are my symptoms. Plus is hurts worse when the weather changes, ex: it is going to rain. Sound familiar?

There's really no difference in treatment whether you did break it or just sprained it. All they would do at the emergency room is splint it, sometimes to the finger next to it. You can do it at home with a Popsicle stick and bandage tape. If your finger is bent, that's different, and you would want to see a doctor to straighten it out before splinting it.

The first thing to do is get to a doctor.
That being said....... there are two types of pain..
Dull & throbbing...... soft tissue damage normally
Sharp & biting......... something more 'permanent' has been hurt
You can also suffer 'bone bruises' where the bone has been struck hard enough that it is damaged but not broken

Spend a few months collecting the radioactive element from fire detectors, then clump this together into a lump, go to a dark room with some undeveloped photographic film and wait a few more months. You should now have an X-ray of your finger and you didn't even have to waste the hospitals time!
Oops even your finger is broken it will probably be healed by then so this wont work.
