There is no reason to be nervous. Having a umbilical hernia (which is your BELLY BUTTON, by the way...ahem) is really a minor fix. A hernia is nothing more than a weak spot in your muscles where IF there's enough pressure (for an adult, like lifting something heavy) your intestines would work their way through, restricting blood flow to that part of the intestine. All the doc will do is go in and stitch the muscles shut. That's it, end of story. You might be off a week or two, depending on how big it is, and if the intestines have worked their way through at all. (Which you would know about instantly...the pain is horrible) You will be back to work before you know it, I promise.

To answer your question, I"m not sure you know what a hernia is.
It is a separated piece of muscle and the intestine loops through it. When you feel a bulge or a pouching around your navel, (usually when you are standing up) then a little piece of intestine is trying to go through that defect. It usually recedes when you lie down. The danger of leaving it uncared for is that that loop of intestine can get caught up in that gap, and will turn gangrenous...so you should have it taken care of. In hernia surgery, all they do is repair the tear in the muscle...there is nothing that they remove...easy surgery. I hope this calms your fears.

What do you do for work? If you don't have any heavy lifting you can be out of work for as little as two days. The hernia is VERY serious, if left untreated it can kill you by becoming trapped and gangrenous. However the surgery to repair it is very minor and usually minimally invasive. Don't be scared. The surgery isn't a serious one, and as long as you get it repaired you'll be fine!

Umbilical Hernia surgery is very safe nowadays. My cousin got her Hernia and colostomy surgery in India by a company called Forerunners Healthcare .The Price for Minimal Invasive and Laparoscopy surgery is very less in India. She paid 25% of the cost she was quoted in America.

Forerunners Healthcare is very famous in India. They arrange Hernia, Appendectomy, Thyroid and other laparoscopy surgery for foreigners in India.
I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and about their patient stories. They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low price, as the Hernia, Colostomy and other minimal invasive surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

Hope this helps.

First off why are you asking this question. If you found out what is wrong with yourself and then the Doctor is setting you up for surgery, then it must be serious. As for how long you will be out of work that is up to your doctor and how fast you heal.

This is not a question non-doctors can really answer for you.

Hello =)

Generally, these things are not even repaired.....unless you are doing so for cosmetic reasons......

The only time a repair is considered "medically necessary" is when there is danger of the hernia "tearing upwards".....

If there is no danger of this, the surgeon will likely not recommend repair, unless there are other considerations.

Namaste, and Happy Holidays,

Ok, I think you have one near your groin, and that is painfull. You'll have to have surgery. I had it and it was not fun! My advice to you is to start drinking heavily.
