Arakhne, who was from Colophon in Lydia (in Anatolia), arrogantly challenged Athena, who was the patroness of arts and crafts, to a contest of skill. Arakhne lost, and as punishment for her sacrilegious boasts and offensive portrayal of the gods in her art was transformed into a spider.

According to Ovid's "Metamorphoses," during the contest between the two, Athena weaved a scene depicting her competition with Poseidon over Athens. Arakhne, on the other hand, beautifully knitted scenes of various mortals seduced by the gods who were disguised as animals. Athena could find no fault with Arakhne's work and in anger struck Arakhne on the forehead 4 times. However, Athena felt pity for her and instead transformed her, with a potion from Hecate, into a spider destined to pursue her former craft for all time.

Arahni (this is the correct name) claimed to be a better weaver than godess Athena so they both had a competition on which Araxni waved a tapesstry with all the 12 gods of Olympus and their bad habits,so Athena got so mad that turned her into a spider (in greek Arahni is the name for spider) so she is always waving but the rain, the wind, animals and people keep on destroying her net!
i hope that will help you, take care!
