I believe self does exist, it's what makes us capable of meta-thought (thinking about thinking). Our awareness of ourselves as seperate from our more biological drives, desires, and needs, is part of what makes us human. But being that it is an entirely personal experience, it's one of those things that is difficult to define and impossible to prove.
I think the ability to conceptuatlize self is something that we're born with, but must be developed though interaction with other self-aware people and through experience. I'm sure we've all met people who are only marginally aware of themselves, and there are cases of 'wild' children who appear to have no real concept of self at all. On the other hand, there are those who would appear have a highly developed awareness of self. Of course, as nobody can get in other people's heads, it's impossible to say for certain.
The concept of self is mostly the same the world over, but there are differences. In many asian and other cultures that put an emphasis co-operative effort and social responsibility, the concept of self is usually defined in terms of the self's relationship with the whole.. In more highly individualized cultures, the self is seen as more an island, an abstract that is seperate of one's environment and can only be 'found' through individual exploration and meditation.

self-worth comes from the certainty which you will cope a minimum of competently, Self appreciate is treating your total character in a being concerned and decent way which extends to people and the form you manage them, humility is understanding which you're no longer any further or much less substantial than absolutely everyone else and not appearing as once you are the b all and end all and are completely arranged to confess to and apologise (meaningfully) for any blunders you're turning out to be made, so logically it follows that all people 3 of those mutually are mandatory for the capability of the entire and would as a result co-exist interior all people to furnish stability and team spirit besides as capability of character.

Self is a poor concept. Awareness is much more precise. Awareness of existance as a unique creature is what we call self-awareness or awareness of self as a separate enitity. We are aware this when we finally connect that we control our fingers and then out feet. A bit later we become aware of our legs and other things we can see. We are never fully aware of ourselves except as is associated with pain.
We know other creatures are aware of self. The apes we teach to speak, can be brought to understand that the creature they see as a reflection is themselves. It is the same with most sea mammals who probably have seen their own reflection enough to realize it they who they see.

The mind only exists in time space at a certain time in space so that being said you must learn to embrace these principles keeping in mind that all things in time/space are random particles within time space, but herein all these random particles find their own place so henceforth comes complete order from total chaos.

The concept of self (awareness) in inborn to every human (and may be to every other animal on the planet as well - we simply don't know.) And no, it really doesn't change no matter where you go on the planet.

When you wake up in the morning, look in the mirror. If you remember doing this before, say hello to yourself, the one who remembers doing things and plans the day's activities. The rest is bafflegab. You'll be living with that self day after day. Get used to it.
