We all need to feel like we have control over a bad situation. Even if that means yelling at an inanimate object or a driver on the expressway that cannot possibly hear you.

Some of the emotional functions of the human brain have primarily evolved to facilitate human-to-human interactions, for example love and anger. Our natural ways for expressing these emotions are in human terms.

This might explain why we personify non-human objects and "speak" to them, particularly when we are agitated or angry because they do not work as expected.

I think that one thing shared between religious and non religious people is that sometimes it seems like a kind of divine presence is playing practical jokes on you or delaying you in every possible way when you want to hurry. I think that the anger is directed at that.
