If you can work on your backhandspring on a trampoline or tumble trac at your gym, that is the best way to get over being scared and the best way to work on the correct body position as you execute it. Your coach should be spotting you while you do it and make corrections as you go. If you were able to do one last summer, then you should be able to work on it on the trampoline without a spot. Just talk with your gym coach about what you can do to condition for it.

I was and sort of still am... in the same situation. Backhandsprings can be difficult- like all tumbling moves. My problem was that I would crunch up instead of staying straight, and once I finally got it- it soon left me and I was back at the beginning. I asked for my spotter to practicly just have me stay straight and they lift me up and do the whole move for me- the point of that was so I can see how a real-good backhandspring feels. Part of my problem was that I was also very nervous because I was the new girl and I was the oldest and my class was a beginner class with all these little girls...lol...but

Enough about me: my advice for you is to...at class or whenever you are practicing- if you dont already have a spotter helping you- is to get a spotter!! They will help you a lot and they will make you feel more safe so you will be less scared. And if you already have a spotter and you still feel scared, ask them to put more mats down on your landing spot or to spot you extra until you can get the feel of a backhandspring.
And as for your nervousness- if your nervousness if more about being embarrest infront of your class- block them out, ignore them, focus on yourself and the move your about the do. That is your class time- make use of it while you are there and you can get help.
My last advice to close this looong answer is - to let your spotter/coach know that you are a bit nervous/scared. They might also have some tips for you!
Good Luck!
