singing along with records and music is fine, but turn down the music suddenly and see how your voice sounds.
a good range is favorable, as well as not much strain in your voice. you definitely dont want it sounding nasally.
put some emotion in your voice, but dont make it sound cheesy.
my most important note of advice is don't sing what you don't have the ability for. you can't just stand up and sing like Chris Cornell or Robert Plant. start off slow. James Hetfield does opera vocal warm ups before he sings.

Post something on youtibe or myspace and get opinions from people you dont know. that is the best way to test it out because no one is going to lie to make you feel better
