By not making that thing go in your head for a loong time. Which is quite hard to do on purpose.

just don't try to forget it. when you don't much bother about a purticular thing it automatically stops. e.g. when at night I can't sleep, I just don't try to, so to engage my self I just keep my eyes open and fall on bed. After some time I automatically fall asleep.
