I was told before leaving from India, that the SIM card would automatically go into roaming once I leave the country. It doesn't appear to have done that as there is NO signal! Where I am in States (Virginia), there are plenty of mobile service providers - so signals shouldn't be an issue - esp. since this NOKIA 6610 was bought here in states. I even tried to manually click "international roaming" under HUTCH services options. Is there any hope of this SIM card or have I lost all the money I deposited? I won't be returning to India for a long while.

Your Nokia 6610 is a tri-band phone GSM900/1800/1900
It sounds like Hutchs international roaming agreement could be with Cingular who is GSM850/1900. If I had to guess, this is why you have no sevice. If the part of Virginia you are in is Cingulars GSM850, your phone will show "no Service" because it's not made to pick up that band. When you travel to an area that has GSM1900 coverage, your phone should work fine

hi m m,
are you sure your international roaming is activated then all you might have to do is go to your phone settings, network selection, and select manual. Then you will get a list of the local networks there select any one network. That should solve the problem. If it doesn't work it means your roaming is not activated. But how much money have you put in your card and what is the validity. If your going to stay there for a long time then its better to purchase a new card from virginia. You can use this card when you come back to India.

You should have sent a sms as ACT IR to 144 before leaving India to activate your International roaming facility, the charge is Rs49/-pm as rent and cost of calls n forwarding is separate.

Your money on the card would be there as long as your card is in the validity and grace period.

I would suggest that you try going to Hutch India website and do it from there,or you could send some one to a Hutch centre in your city to make a request, they may need a fax from you to activate the International roaming.

All the best..Seasons greetings!!

Probably, Hutch don't have any business partner or 'Friend' Network Provider in your area in Virginia or the frequency range is different from India for which your Hutch SIM Card is designed i.e. not 900/1800 MHz. All the money which you have deposited would obviously be forfeited since you are out of Coverage area.
