If it is electric, Check the red reset button on the upper thermostat, under the top panel. Before you go to the trouble of replacing your element or elements, and wasting money, try some simple tests.

Turn off the power to the water heater. remove the wires to the elements (one element at a time) and get a meter and check the element for continuity. If you have continuity, I would then put the wires back on and turn the power back on and see if you have power to the element from the thermostat. If not then replace the upper or lower thermost. If you do have power on them both, there is a possibility that you have a false reading from the continuity test but try these tests first.
If it should be your element, make sure you get the correct wattage element. It should be stamped on the side where the wires connect.

The principle of an elect water heater is easy enough, its just like an electric kettle, you need a supply a thermostat and an element.
But just about the only thing you can do on your own safely is to check you have an elec supply to your heater, it should have its own fuse or circuit breaker hopefully with a little light near the heater to show the supply is OK.
Any thing more than that I am reluctant to give you advise, with a bit of luck it could be the thermostat which is easy enough to change and not expensive. The heating element on its own is also not really expensive but you need to know what you are doing before checking these out.
Find a friendly electrician to check it out and point to the problem, do not try and 'fix' anything that you are not sure about, I know the labor charges could cost, but better to be safe than sorry.

If it is leaking then you replace it. Since you say it suddenly stopped I assume you are getting cold water only. For gas - check the pilot light. If that blew out then you will not get any hot water. Lighting the pilot is easy - there are usually directions on the water heater. For electric - check the fuses or circuit breaker. These usually run on 220 volts and it should be marked in the panel box. Many electrics are on a timer that can go bad.

If it is gas, try relighting. You need to know how this is done. It is only safe if done properly.

If that doesn't work, try replacing the thermocouple.
