I agree with 2cute4u.
Saying goodbye when youknow itsgoing to end right then is like a sinking feeling. I would prefer the former.
Although do we have to say good bye? Already, I don't feel like posting this answer. It looks senti, and too realto be posted on a virtual board.

Saying good-bye and knowing that it will be over. A fiance with terminal cancer for example. You live every second knowing and jump every time the phone rings. It eats you up emotionally knowing there is nothing you can do.

Any sense of finality makes a goodbye all the easier. Granted, they both hurt. But the wondering whether or not you will see them again is a much longer lasting kind of pain. One needs closure to move on, lest we forever carry the emotional baggage with us.

Knowing is of course much worse b/c you are acutely aware of their death and your loss. Not knowing means that you are unaware of the potential loss, that is, unless you live your life knowing that life could end at any moment. I have experienced both and I must say that knowing is to walk through the stages of grief while your loved one barely hangs on to life. Knowing is realizing your own imminent death and the preciousness of all life. Knowing is being strong, happy, and living on for your loved one. Knowing is a live-altering experience.

Definately the first. The finality is harsh and difficult to accept whereas in your second example there is a chance left open for a future time.

I think the first one would be far more worse because this has happened to me before as well but I can't imagine going through it again especially with my husband who I love more than life itself.

Perhaps the person was not meant to be in your life forever. If not, perhaps you gained something personally valuable from knowing him or her that will be yours always.
