DAP, download accelerator plus works well for me.
This download manager looks for multiple sorces to download from at the same time. It will also split the file into five parts and do a 5 way download from a single source. So it is faster than the plain IE downloader.

Search online for "download managers". Something which is best for the Indian scenario (where nights are free), are managers which can be automated to download at a certain time (scheduler).
I have tried such a thing sometime back, but check online to get a better idea. Some download managers also upload at a certain time.
Sometime back BSNL had 2AM to 8AM free, so I used something similar to the link below.

I dont see any reason you need a download manager everthing you download just downloads and some have thier own download manager.

Download Accelerator is the best for downloading stuff from website..
Emule or kazaa if you downloading from a peer to peer (P2P) network..

if you go to downloads.com they give you ratings of the software cost or if it is free...amazing site if you have checked it before/the having ratings and everything you need to know
