In 1978 the NFL went to a 16-game regular season and started a 3-round playoff format.

Since then, how many NFC champions made the playoffs as a wildcard?

tomel68 has it backwards. The Raiders were the wild-card team in Super Bowl XV, not the Eagles.

Since 1978, no NFC team has made the Super Bowl as a wild card. The only NFC team to make the Super Bowl as a wild card since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970 was Dallas in 1975 (finished second to the then-St. Louis Cardinals in the NFC East but advanced to Super Bowl X, only to lose to Pittsburgh).

I don't think that any NFC Champions were a wild card entry into the playoffs. I thought the 1980-81 Eagles won the NFC East and beat the wild card winner Cowboys in the NFC title game. I think that since 1978 only seven wild card teams have become conference champions (but were all AFC teams) and advanced to the Super Bowl. Of those seven, four have won the Super Bowl. (1980-81 Raiders, 1997-98 Broncos, 2000-01 Ravens and 2005-06 Steelers)

To answer your question 3 wild card teams have player in the NFC Championship game. the 86 Redskins, the 87 Vikings and the 89 Rams. Thou none of these teams have won the championship. Side note the Houston Oilers were the first Wild Card team to play in the Championship game in 78.
