Not necessarily. It depends on what you despise. Either way, truly despising anything can lead to unhappiness.
Example: If you despise judgmental individuals, the act of judging and despising such individuals makes you judgmental; thus, you become what you despise, which can actually cause you to despise yourself, and you may despise yourself subconsciously, so you don't actually realize that you despise yourself. (That's just not good for yours mental state.)
On the other hand, let's say you don't become a hypocrite. Let's say you despise materialism. If you truly "despise" materialism, you may become a homeless nomad who avoids having any possessions whatsoever. (It sounds noble, but the consequences of having nothing at all will probably make you unhappy as well.)
My advice is to avoid despising anything. Focus more on understanding why people do what they do rather than hating them for doing it. We are all good people who make bad mistakes (some worse than others), and if we can understand why we do what we do, we have a better opportunity to avoid such mistakes in the future.

People who despise things or other people usually is because they see themselves in those they despise and as long as they continue to despise someone else they (the despiser) usually pays with one of their very own children being exactly like the one they despise so much. What goes around comes around.

Probably. My mom despised typing when she was young, now that's all she does for a living. I don't like kids and my Mom swears I'll end up with 5 of them.
