If you go by stats it is Emmitt Smith, but I think that Barry Sanders is the best ever for now. He didnt have the O-line that Emmitt had and he would have crushed the rushing record if he had not retired early. I think that LT of the chargers will eventually be known as the greatest ever theough. Because he has a little Bary in him along with a little Emmitt as well. If anything he is the best right now.

For those saying LT, it's the line. Every number from the low sacks to the backup running backs getting the massive yards (the secondary RB has like 65 carrys for an average of 6.5 a carry which is more than LT's yards per carry). The quarterback was sacked 24 times this season (while the defense dished out like 35). I think Emmit Smith had the line too. Barry Sanders had no line and everybody knew the ball was going to Barry because the recievers and quarterbacks always sucked. That's why Barry got good numbers. He was probably fed the ball 60% of the time.

This question has no clear cut answer. If you base it on pure ability, you have to say it was Barry Sanders. He put up the numbers with absolutely no help! If you look at impact he had on a team, you have to go with Jim Brown. The game has changed so much over the years, there is no true way to guage the "BEST EVER." So...you simply have to acknowledge them all as some of the best ever. (When I say "them all", I am referencing the likes of Barry, JB, OJ, LT, Emmitt, Sweetness, Gale, etc....not the likes of Eric Metcalf or Christian Okoye or the many backs who never even get to step foot in a real game.

Depends on what a particular person defines as a 'running back.' Some would say Walter Payton. Others would say Jim Brown, Marcus Allen, Emmitt Smith or Barry Sanders. I would say LaDanian Tomlinson is the best "All-Around" running back to ever play the game. He does everything and is considered the best player in the league.

Shaun Alexander.. #37 for the Seahawks... had a bad year this year because he was out half the season with a broken foot. But the records that L.T. beat were Shaun's records from last year plus he was the MVP of the superbowl. And he's just a good all around guy. He doesn't talk alot of smack or get into any trouble. I think that next year he is going to be smokin and he'll be able to give L.T. a run for his money.

Barry Sanders, watch the game film of him and it pretty much explains itself. Also used to enjoy the one commerical with him for Original Coors and their be an original. An Opposing coach once said of Barry Sanders he has two speeds, here he comes and there he goes.

I would say Ricky Williams because of what he can do. He can make lots of good moves, he can cut up field, and he has great speed too. Nocwonder he won the Heisman. If you can be great in college and the NFL, you deserve to be the best running back ever like Ricky.
