My fuel guage starts to jump around 1/4 tank then becomes useless. I belive it is the sending unit. Do I have to remove(drop) my fuel tank to get to it? Any other possible causes?

Yes, your symptom is the sending unit and its in the tank, which you will have to drop to gain access. More good news, the sending unit is only available as part of the fuel pump module. ($$) The upside is that you'll get a new pump out of the deal, and should be the last time you'll ever have to open the tank. A new o-ring usually comes with the new module, be sure to check, and also make sure to get a new tank locking ring as well. Will save the day if you tear up the old one. And by the way, it doesn't matter if you run the tank down low, no sediment will be sucked up. Whether full or empty, the pump always draws from the same point in the bottom of the tank.

The sending unit is in the tank and yes you'd have to drop the tank to get at it.
Better still don't let the tank get below 1/4. Once the fuel level gets that low you risk picking up sediment from the bottom of the tank, and if you live in a cold climate you also risk getting condensation in the tank which can freeze and block fuel lines.
