Yes, *most* PS2 games will work on the PS3. A few that require specialized controllers (like Guitar Hero) won't work yet as there's no adapter available for those controllers.
As for how they look on the PS3, there's been some bad buzz lately saying that PS2 games look worse, but the truth is that they look just fine IF you make sure you enable progressive scan in progressive-scan-capable games. Games that have 480p widescreen modes, like Shadow of the Colossus and Burnout: Revenge, look perfect on the PS3. The PS3 doesn't improve the appearance of PS2 games like the XBox 360 does to some XBox games, but the backwards-compatibility of the PS3 is more universal (as opposed to the 360, which is only backwards-compatible with some XBox titles and only with a software update specific to those titles).

well the only ones that are backwards compatible are the 20 GB, 60GB, and some 80GB models now all of the PS3s that are sold in stores are not backwards compatible usually if a PS3s has 4 usb slots and a memory card readers you would have a backwards compatible and if it only has 2 usb slots then it is not backwards compatible the only places you will find the BC PS3s would be ebay and nowhere else don't listen to matt he is a s***box 360 fanboy

Yes, the system is backwards-compatible for all the playstation games. It also plays the new blue-ray dvd discs( which, in the stores, those players run 700-1000 dollars alone). Check out the system at your local Best Buy on the LCD TV, it looks absolutely amazing!
