Hmmm, never felt the urge to swear if I burn myself cooking... my usual response is Owwwwwwwwwwwwww.... or a loud scream. But everyone responds differently, I think the main reason would be that because burning yourself hurts so much the part of your brain which responds to pain is most likely to come up with a certain way of expressing the pain that is most fitting to the situation. Some people scream, some people shout swear words and there are those the jump around in silence trying not to say anything because it hurts. It depends very much on the personality of the person and the situation.... after all are you likely to swear profusely if you burn yourself while cooking if a small impressionable child was in the room, I suppose it depends!

This is learned behavior. It is instinctive to yell out in pain, e.g. listen to a dog if u step on its tail. However, using profanity in the place of a cry of pain is learned. For example, if a child hears a parent or adult use profanity when they are angry or discomfort, a child might be likely to do the same, just because they witnessed a "model" participate in the behavior. It begins as "modeling" the behaviors of others. Often children don't understand what they are saying...they just know that it is a response that they are "modeling." After a while, swearing becomes second nature. We all picked up reacting this way from somewhere.
Think about this, if you were never taught (or heard) the word S**t or F**k or D**m...what would you be using in there place?
Hope this helps.

It is a learned response from childhood upon wintessing our parents burn themselves with this reaction. Just try to change your language over-all and instead of saying curse words, use something funny in it's place. I made up the word "shoopa!" I also say "oh crackers!" My kids think it's funny and I'm also setting an example for them to use clean language.

Because getting burned is very painful, & you're hardly likely to shrug your shoulders & say "hey ho, that didn't hurt much". The same goes for when you slam your fingers in a door or bump into something hard.

well i think that we would swear because we learn it from older poeple as we grow. if you hear dad saying ****! every time something goes wrong you automatically find yourself swearing when the same thing happens to you. it really is human nature and as you start swearing it becomes one important way of expressing your anger or frustration because thats what you are used to hearing.

simple thing, because it hurts, and I think it's easier when you swear or shout. People are different, so some of them are more sensitive, some of them not. So everyone expresses pain differently

I remember something about this from English at school, many years ago!
Something to do with swear words being more satisfying to say because they are shorter and snappier ("oopsy daisy" just doesn't quite do it for me) and then of course the fact that we shouldn't say them makes them come tripping out.
Oh yeah - and 'cos it ***** hurts!!
