your router should have a WAN port on the back of it. The cable from the modem should go there. Then there should at leaste be 4 wired ports on the back. The desktop will connect there as long as it has an ethernet card. Then the laptop will receive packets from the wireless signal. Make sure you set up your router for DHCP, and your 2 machines to automatically assign ip.. Then just set up the network on both machines and your done..

Click the "Start" button on your desktop, and then click "Shutdown." Confirm you wish to shut down the computer by clicking "Shut Down" in the pop-up box that appears. Wait for 1 minute before moving to Step

1. Unplug the the power cord from the back of the Netgear router. Wait 1 minute to allow any built up electrical charge to disperse.

2. Unplug the cable modem by unplugging the power cord from the back of the modem.

3. Unplug the ethernet cords from the back of the computer, Netgear router and modem.

4. Reconnect the ethernet cables to the computer, Netgear router and modem. Wiggle the ethernet cables once inserted to make sure no loose connections exist.

5. Power on the computer by pressing the power button located on the case. Wait until the computer has fully booted up before moving on to Step 7.

6. Plug the power cord back into the modem.

7. Plug the power cord back into the Netgear router.

Launch your Web browser on your computer to see if the connection issue has been resolved. If the issue is still not resolved, contact your ISP's technical service department, as the issue may be on its end.

If your netgeat router is newly bought, there should be a # on the box for free tech support: 888-NETGEAR (638-4327). They require cerain info, such as the serial #, and date and place of purchase, because the support is time limited. What they will do, among other things, is ask you to go to a Netgear link (I'm sorry, I don't remember it) which checks your connection and allows you to make changes to some items that will allow your router to work with the other hardware that you're having trouble connecting to it...
