Depends on what kind of stain, but I have great luck with Shout and Gain. I spray the shout on the stain(s) while getting the rest of the load together. If I have a really bad load, I just pour about a cup of Shout into the wash cycle and soak it for a while.

Treat the stains first with a product such as Spray and Wash, then let soak awhile in the soapy detergent water before you wash. I think Tide is a good brand. I find that the "name" brands such as Tide, Cheer, etc, work much better than the cheap, bargain brands. I do find that Wal-Mart's brand (Sam's) and the Publix supermarket brands are less expensive but still good.

It is the detergent with a stain remover that gets out stains I use Zout, or Shout mostly.

None on their own. You have to pre-wash the stains with Irish Spring (green bar soap) or 100% pinesol if oily stain. Remember that: once you wash clothes in hot water and dry them old stains settle.

Shout is great. I also use iron out, very powerful.
