Check out CCMixter.org they've got lots of independent and some signed artists their. One caveat, a lot of the music is crappy, but when you find a good song it's really good.
Also if you want music you hear on the radio go to your favorite radio stations website and look for a place where they have their music charts. Or even better find a online station the plays your favorite genre of music, and the songs you like (the name is provided right next to the song) write them down, and download them.
