Yes. They have been found and referenced in many an ancient mariner's log. They were/are commonly called, "dugong."

"The name dugong originated from the Malay language duyung meaning lady of the sea or mermaid."

All urban legends come from some kind of story with a little fact in it. What kind of stoners hundreds of years ago could have come up with a mermaid??

Found one in a can of sardines once. Needless to say she wasn't in real good condition. Sniffy our cat ate the whole thing. Should I have turned it over to science instead?

no, the mermaid myth came from a birth defect where people are born with their legs attached other than that it's all myth
