Well, I'm 13 years old and I've been wanting to wear like clothes, shoes, etc with skulls on them. My mom says I can but I need to do research on if skulls mean anything like evil, devil, or etc.
So help me!
Thanks!

It's just a trend made popular by The Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

Skull symbols have been around a long, long time. A long time ago, it was pretty common to see skulls on gravestones. They served as a reminder to the living that hey, life is short, death will come eventually, so just get used to the idea.

At some point, this was deemed "too creepy" and fell out of fashion.

Then came the late 70's/early 80's. AIDS was rampant, everyone was sure that there'd be a nuclear war soon, and so some people "splintered" into subcultural groups. One group of people got really angry about the way the world was going. They morphed into what got called "punk." The other group of people didn't so much get angry as depressed. They used gallows humor to make light of the situation. These folks wound up being called "goths." Both groups made use of skulls as a point of anti-mainstream sentiment-- something to show that they weren't part of the common culture. Goths, also, tended toward Victorian-era clothing and culture, and the Victorians had no problem with death, skulls, bones and the like. (There's whole books on Victorian mourning rules and fashions; going to funerals was quite a hobby for some people.)

Why the huge history lesson? Well, goth/punk fashion, as you've surely seen, is making a huge comeback. Thanks to stores like Hot Topic, anyone can buy something that screams "anti-establishment" or maybe just "I like black and skulls." At this point, skulls and other "goth/punk" fashions are just that-- fashions. Sure sure, there are some people who still wear black, say, because they feel they're in mourning for the whole world. And some people really do believe in the punk mantras. That's quite fine. But mostly, these days, it's just a "look." There's nothing evil about skulls. We all have one. We're just hiding them under our faces. :)

Every culture is different, for me as an example a skull represents how the head of a human, animal, etc looks like after its dead, so for me it represents death. And the way of afterlife how you look. If you notice in movies they use skeletons or skulls as scary figures to represent evil. So i would not think that skulls is ok to wear but again everyone is different and every culture is different. What can mean evil for one culture can mean the opposite of another culture. Its ultimately up To you

your mom sounds cool. the skulls dont mean anything, its just the person who looks at it who determines what it means, it is a punk statement just mostly a design, i wouldnt see you wearing skulls and think devil wordshipper or goth girl or anything just cool style, by the way i am christian and i try really hard not to offend people by what i wear, i dont wanna wear something bad either. i hope you get the answers you want. oh, if you are gonna wear black makeup and stuff then thats another story, then it would look like you wanted to be dead or something with all the skulls, just keep it cute

I don't think they express the evil, but I surely know that they're disgusting...And recently I saw that all the great clothing stores all over Europe promote skulls on their clothing items and accessories, but personally, I would never wear such a stupid thing

In todays teen fashion, they have about the same meaning as a smiley face or little hearts. Some people may think that they have an underlying meaning or insinuation, but over all they are just a fashion statement. If you feel comfortable with them go for it. But I've seen very religious people wearing clothing with them on it - and it seems to be no big deal. Hope this helps!

skulls usually represent death and its inevitability. goth sub-cultures use them on clothing and accessories because they enjoy flaunting things that 'normal' people find to be grotesque or inappropriate. since most people don't like thinking or talking about death, skulls, skeletons, tombstones, etc, are a favorite theme for those wanting to flout the mainstream.
in short, no, they're not usually representative of evil things, just death, which isn't evil, just kind of scary.

No. As someone mentioned above, the Pirates movies made them popular again. And before that, it was the film, Goonies. Its just a fad right now.

Actually, skulls are being worn by everyone today. They have become a very trendy accessory worn by even the preppy girls. They don't make you dark, evil, or gothic or anything just because you wear them.

i would think it would depend on your reason for wearing it. if you thought kittens were demons and you wore them all over your clothes to feel powerful then it would be bad. see what i mean. skulls are just part of the fad rock wear going right now. if you are wearing it to be cool and have fun and are not thinking of anything more sinister than it should be fine to wear.

Skull and bones represent pirates and poison.

There's no superstition about wearing them. And they generally don't mean anything bad if you're wearing them.
I wear them all the time
