Considering he was "proud to be a liberal" he probably still would be. However Mr. Franklin probably wouldn't be involved in politics if he were a contemporary man, he would be a research scientist probably working on alternative energy solutions, as his scientific knowledge led him into his political interests. In the modern world he would be vocal about some political issues, but would be more of a theoretical scientist than diplomat. The Revolution drew him into the political world from his "inventor" roots.

I think he would be a Republican. He favored small federal government and was for states rights. With regard to vertical732’s comment, the idea of liberalism in the 18th centaury was much closer to the classical meaning of liberal (to have liberty from) and was far different politically than it is today. Actually, today’s “liberals” are trying to change the ideals, foundations and freedoms for which he fought.
