Fry's has a Compaq laptop computer on sale for $399 with the following features:
-Intel Celeron M 430 Processor
-512MB DDR2 System Memory
-Super Multi 8x DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer
-Microsoft Windows XP Home

It will be used primarily for surfing the web, webcamera with Messenger, etc.

Good deal or not?

Pass, Celerons blow donkey dong. Stay as far away as you can from a celeron! Find one with a Pentium M or a Core 2. AMD turions are pretty ok too. Also, 512MB ram is small, you really need a gig. XP home edition has serious problems, you would have to upgrade to XP Pro.

Remember this: Vista is about to be released in January and that system will CHOKE if you try to run the latest Windows. That's why it's so cheap. They know that it's under-powered and they have to get rid of it NOW before Vista comes out and that computer becomes a paperweight.

It sounds like a good by, but make sure you can add another 512mb ram chip, you are going to need it if youa re messing around with webcam and stuff of that nature.

You will be hard pressed to find a cheaper laptop. I'm not saying one doesn't exist, but I don't see them in any ads or on the net.
