I believe it was "Willie." According to the film "Patton" (and remember, Hollywood can't always be relied on for historical accuracy), he was given the dog in Britain and called him "William the Conqueror." In the movie, a much smaller dog barked at William and the larger dog cowered. This led Patton to tell his new canine, "Willie! Your name is Willie!"

You're probably referring to Willy, which was short for William the Conqueror as depicted in the movie starring George C. Scott. His first pit bull terrier, which he bought for his daughters, was named Tank.

Originally, it was William the Conqueror.

He wasn't very aggressive, so he just called him "Willie".
