To Funchy.
All my neighbors have cats for one reason... to kill gophers. If you think that cats do not kill rodents you are wrong. The man's cat across the street brought in a gohper every single day. Dead or alive.

My father kept our two cats from living in the barn by building them their own house. It was about 2 feet by 3 feet with a small porch--about 3 feet by 1 1/2 feet, on one side, and placed up in a tree. He built it with used lumber, so other than the nails and the cost of the bits of bracing he used to secure it to the tree, it was free. Because it was 15 feet off the ground the cats prefered the security to living in the barn relatively exposed to whatever predators cats fancy in their minds are to be found in a barn. And the best part is that the cats still went to the barn to hunt and kept the rat and pigeon population down.

Offer a cat a better (to his mind) alternative and he will invariably choose it.

You should get rid of them!!!!!!
IMO garage keep cats is cruel. You should take the cats to the shelter, preferably a no kill shelter. Better they be put down, however, then get run over or spread illness around the neighbourhood. If you have a rodent problem hire an exterminator.
Obviously you let these animals wander free. I'm sceptical about your commitment to their health and well being, vet checks, shots and proper food.

They're probably cold and hungry. Cats are pets and deserve to have at least the basics -- let them inside.

Cats do not kill gophers and very few go after adult wild rats.

Get a guard dog if you can't keep them out yourself.

Put dogs in your garage. When they won't leave, put gorrillas in there. Keep it up until you're up to elephants, and then you're on your own.
