Afghanistan is landlocked... some answers dont make sense.. They would have to invade Pakistan as well, or Iran... thus my question? What was so important that the USSR wanted from Afghanistan?

I was reading some of the other answers. Ports are mentioned. The only problem is that Afghanistan is a land locked country. We had to over come that with MASSIVE air support when we invaded in 2001.

The USSR invaded Afghanistan because the Communist backed government was failing. The Mujahadeen was giving the Soviets all the insurgency they could handle. For a long time, they were actually winning, but when the ambushes got better, the Soviets needed to get out. They could no longer logistically support the war.

What makes you sure the intention of the Soviet Union was to "take over Afghanistan"? Have you read more de-classified CPSU documents from the Kremlin? As others have said here, the Soviets were propping up a failed regime. Sounds like the U.S. in Vietnam, doesn't it? Was the intention of the United States to get more ports in the South China Seas? Perhaps you can answer this final question - if the Soviets really wanted to take over, don't you think they would have sent more and better troops?

The USSR (and Russia before it) wanted to take over Afghanistan for it's ports for shipping. Russia has only the Barents Sea and part of the Gulf of Finland shipping and both of those are partly frozen over in winter time.

It had little if anything to do with oil and more to do with ocean access. Russia now has that access by peaceful treaty instead of war based hostile seizure. Because of this the Russian export economy is growing rapidly.
