If women get big hips to support children then why do men get broad shoulders?

There is no anatomical difference between male and female shoulders. The muscle mass and bone density difference between the two sexes is only dependent on testosterone levels, genetics, and environmental factors (e.g. weight lifting). There are plenty of males with puny shoulders, and women with broader shoulders than them.

You were in the right, she had no business taking a permanent marker to a book. That frustrates me because I work at a library. Though you can be proud of her for trying to "censor" the book, you should talk to her and explain that the reason you study the pictures in the book is so that the form of the person you are drawing will be in proportion. I also draw so I understand why you use the book as a reference. Oh, and also tell her that yes you do plan on drawing the outline of a penis because some of your subjects will be male. Don't get me wrong I do mean fully clothed males! lol

Men get broad shoulders because they have to lift. Men have evolved to be warriors. The testosterone that men produce causes for men to develop tissues and muscles.

Have a look at the Chinese women's swimming team. And by the way, I have had two children, easily, and my hips are narrow.

For throwing spears.

No, I only 'heard' this once. It may or may not be true, but seems like a good guess.
