If you see closely, the current Metallica doesn't give ANYTHING for free. While most bands let you download at least a song from their website, Metallica wants everybody to pay, that's why the put everything in itunes. They used to give free records in their shows back in the 80's, now they won't give a smile for free. Why they need or want so much money?

Its not their fault...

Back in the 80's u have to remeber, metallica was more about rebellion, they were young, and so they would give away free records as a "**** you" to their record companies,
Now the record companies dont allow them to produce free copies of things,

And also because now metallica is more of a corporation...they have all these people working with them in their HQ,
they have 14 people working on the website and fanclub,
they have a few more people working in the merchantdise department,
Then the sound tech's that work with them around HQ.

Q prime will not let metallica be like that anymore because they are a commercial strong point, and is unadvised.

However if your talking about things for free,
over at livemetallica.com they have free bootlegs u can download (as well as shows that u can purchase).

Also their fanclub, it costs per year, but metallica is actually losing $200,000 a year to keep it up, as the price you pay to be in the fanclub, goes to the people who work at it , to give u the exclusive videos and fanzines.

So you cant exactly say that they are being greedy, but thats my viewpoint,

I am guessing in earlier days they blew off thousands of dollars off of useless crap. Also, musicians really do not make much money off of CDs at all. They rely on tours and merchandise to make the money. They could be in a steep rut as of now.
