i also have PCOS. i think it all depends on the person. i know some people do well with metformin but personally i couldn't take it. it made me feel sick all the time and have real bad indgestion. i have now stopped all the meds and have managed to lose some weight without taking anything. it's early days so i will have to see how i get on long term.
the only advice i can give is to try it as everyone reacts differently. i hope she finds something that works. good luck :)

Yeh I'm 22 and have bad pcos, I haven't been given metformin yet as my doctor wants me to be tested for diabetes (from the pcos). My closest friend however has been on it for years and found that she lost weight quite quickly and swears by it. Whenever she doesn't take it she finds she begins to gain weight quite quickly. It was originally designed for diabetes and regulates the insulin, as pcos effects almost all hormone levels in the body.

it will help most patients as long as she follows a low carb lifestyle. she will find out on metformin that she will not like the results of eating a high carb meal, as it can cause serious stomach upset. this also helps prevent her from becoming stage 2 diabetic which tends to run hand in hand as pcos patients get older. it's caused by insulin resistance. if her dr hasn't already done a glucose tolerance test you ought to ask about one. i am on metformin 850mgs three times a day and it does work for me for the most part. it did not help fertility wise, but your daughter can take birth control and metformin at the same time. good luck to her, sometimes pcos symptoms can be a royal pain, and very frustrating. i think it's great your supportive and educating yourself too!

Yes metformin does help patients with this not only help with PCOS but also loose weight. She may not loose weight extremely fast but the weight does come off. Many patients with PCOS are a little overweight and is one of the signs of PCOS or I should say side effects from it. Metformin does help with both.

While participating at Radiant Recovery dot com, I have noticed women with PCOS posting. They say that "doing the food" (following the 7 steps of Radiant Recovery) caused a definite improvement in their condition.
It's only good food. It can't hurt and it might help.
That's my recommendation.
