@Alion 300 do you know anything about Eukleides,Pythagoras,Thalis, Ippokratis (not the doctor from Ko,I mean the mathematician from Chios) ,Eratosthenis,Archimedes etc. There are many many ancient Greek mathematicians.
Of course, other cultures like Egyptians and Chinese who were more ancient than Greeks have done things on mathematics(in arithmetics better) but the first who put mathematics on a scientefic base ever were ancient Greeks. And it is not me who say those things.Historic books do.The history of mathematics is full of the Greek thought.
In mathematics there are also new scientists as Karatheodori who was teacher of Einstein and a great mathematician of previous century.
Beside mathematics,Greece created architecture(wherever you go on the planet you see buildings of the ancient greek style),sculptures, democracy ,philosophy and don't forget the theater and poetry.

@fisikaellinida : that word is arabic indeed but do you know when it has been created? In 11th-12th century.Ancient greek mathematicians made huge things in mathematics in 7th-6th-5th century BC.The mathematicians all over the world consider greeks as "the fathers of mathematics".

@alion:when we talk about mathematics,we don't talk about counting or making triangles. We talk about a science.Do you know what was the important that Greeks did? They made mathematics because they liked it,because they wanted to find a new way of thinking, not only for their everyday needs.
So,they began with experiments and then they were trying to prove theoritically what they have found. That way of thinking seperates them from ancient Egyptians and all the rest.Mathematics is not something that someone can invent.Mathematics always existed before men.Men just found mathematics. The first who found mathematics as a science are Greeks. The previous were just calculating.
I am Greek but this is not the reason that I say all those things. Those things are written to university books all over the world.I am mathematician ,specified in history of mathematics and I really know what I am talking about.

The Greeks invented democracy. I don't think they invented math
although they did contribute. Ancient Greece is better known for
it's philosophers, such as Socrates and Plato.

Eleni, thanks for the list of mathematicians. One thing-you say that although other cultures did things with mathematics, the Greeks were the first to put math on a scientific basis.
I have to ask, when has mathematics not been on a scientific basis? The Greeks may have revolutionized it,but mathematics
had already been invented-which is my point.

ellina here ellinida.I thing we should make a couple!!!!!I am taught to say tht we've invented many things.I haven't personally checked it.I've recently learnt tht the word algebra isn't greek as I thought but it's derived from the persian word al-jabr!!!So mathematics existed long time ago.I think tht our contribution was of great value though!
