Well it's hard to pick out a best. I personally like antivir because the basic version is free and it has gotten rid of a lot of nasty trojans and worms no prob.

Believe me, Norton isn't even among the top-10 anti-viruses. If you want to pay for anti-viruses, then purchase Kaspersky or BitDefender or F-Secure or NOD32. All of them have much higher detection rates than Norton and they are comparatively lighter on resources. But you may get the free AVG anti-virus, and it will still protect you from more trojans than Norton.
Here are some tips:
1.Never use more than one anti-virus or firewall. There is a good possibility that they will fight each other. However, you can use as many anti-spywares as you wish.
2.Always keep the real time scanning/resident shield of your anti-virus and any one of your anti-spyware active, especially while downloading something from file sharing networks.
3.Keep all your security software updated, and scan your computer for spyware every 1 week and for viruses every 2 weeks.

This computer geek friend of mine absolutely swears by the anti-virus program by Trend Micro. It's also the one that hotmail uses to scan email attachments. Also, if you don't already have it...AdAware SE is a great back up and it's free to download for personal use. You can find it here www.lavasoftusa.com.

I use Kaspersky's anti virus, updates several times a day, and has caught everything before it's got into the computer. Pricey, but it is up to you.
