You should get Battlefield 2142 because in the game you have more types of rounds to choose from. Plus, you're in the future.

I have played all of the Battlefields games. I still play 1942 a fair bit, but I am now playing 2142 and love it. Depending on how you intend to play - will set which you should buy.
If you play mostly alone - Local Lan or single player mode -- Buy Battlefield 2
Few servers to play on-line.
All options available to single player games.
If you play mostly On-line -- Buy Battlefield 2142
Many options and Maps only to On-line players
Titan mode only to on-line players.
So - If you play by yourself at home BF 2, if you play on-line BF 2142.

I'd say Battlefield 2142. I havn't played it.. but I played Battlfield 2 and LOVED it. But the problem that arose was that no one ever played... there were about 5 servers up at a time, and each of them were full and it was way hard to get into one... I'd go for 2142.

BF2...
EA and DICE are notorious for starting out with crap. There's always bugs.
BF2 has been out a while and I haven't noticed any more bugs.
Wait a while before you get BF 2142.
